Setup & connecting your piano
My keyboard isn't detected. What do I check?
First the cable: connect the keyboard directly to the computer over USB (some hubs drop instruments). Then the browser: when Clef asks for MIDI access, allow it. If you dismissed the prompt, click the permission icon in the address bar and re-enable it. In desktop Firefox, install or allow the MIDI component Firefox prompts for; if Clef keeps listening, fully restart Firefox with your keyboard already plugged in. Finally, open Settings inside Clef and pick your device in the list, then press a key to confirm. A page refresh after plugging in helps on some systems.
Which browsers work?
Chrome, Edge, Brave, and desktop Firefox. Clef listens to your keyboard through the browser's support for talking to instruments (Web MIDI), which Safari doesn't have. Desktop Firefox asks you to approve a MIDI permission component the first time.
Is there a mobile or tablet app?
Yes, for Android phones and tablets. Connect your digital piano over USB and Clef reads it through the Android app. There is no iPhone or iPad app yet, and browsers on those devices cannot reach a connected piano.
Which keyboards and digital pianos work?
Nearly every digital piano and keyboard made in the last two decades. If it has a USB port (often labeled 'USB to Host' or MIDI), or it already works with other music software, it works with Clef.
Can I use an acoustic piano with a microphone?
No. Clef needs to know exactly which keys you pressed and when, and only a direct connection to the instrument provides that reliably. Microphone support does not exist.
Practicing
What do the green and red markings mean?
Green means you played what's written: the score lights up and moves forward. Red marks a wrong note at the exact spot in the score where it happened, so you always know precisely what went wrong and where.
Do I have to hit chords perfectly together?
No. Chords tolerate a natural amount of rolling, so quick arpeggiation within a short window counts as the chord.
Why are there so few controls?
By design. Practice mode gives you a metronome and lets you start from any bar; a from-memory review gives you a restart and a 'Show me' when you're stuck. There is no playback speed slider and no section looping: Clef keeps you playing rather than configuring.
What counts as a 'clean pass' after I miss a bar?
After a miss, you re-practice that spot with the score visible. A pass is clean when you play the tested bar with no wrong notes; two clean passes in a row and the bar returns to the normal review schedule.
What are the longer run-throughs?
Checkpoints. Clef first checks short groups of memorized bars. Once neighboring groups are solid, it joins them into progressively longer runs until the whole section connects.
Catalog
How many pieces are there?
The catalog runs from beginner Bach and the Petzold minuets through Für Elise, Gymnopédie No. 1 and Clair de Lune, up to Chopin's études and La Campanella. Every piece is engraved and checked by hand before publishing, so it is curated rather than scraped, and it grows on request instead of all at once. The library page lists all of it: https://playclef.com/library/
Can I import my own sheet music?
No. You can request any piece from inside the app (title, composer, and a source link) and vote on other people's requests. Requests steer what gets curated next, and right now most of them are engraved and published within a day.
Account & billing
Is Clef free?
Yes, Clef is free while it is in beta, with no card and no trial clock. When paid plans arrive, subscribing will be a separate choice, and beta members keep preferential terms. Details are on the pricing page.
How do I cancel?
From inside the app: your account's billing section opens the Stripe customer portal, where cancellation is two clicks. Your access continues to the end of the paid period.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. A 30-day no-questions money-back guarantee covers your first paid month, and EU customers additionally have the statutory right of withdrawal. See the refund policy.
Can I sign in with Google?
Yes. Accounts work with email and password or with 'Continue with Google'.
How do I delete my account and data?
Open Settings → Account and choose Delete account. Clef emails a one-time link that you confirm while signed in to the same account. Access ends immediately and the privacy policy describes the limited records retained for legal obligations.
Languages
Which languages does Clef speak?
English and German, fully translated. You can switch in Settings.
